The Savings and Benefits of NEMA Premium® Motors

NEMA Premium TM motor diagram

The cost of the motor is insignificant compared to the cost of the electricity required to run the motor. If operating 2000 hours or more per year, then it makes sense to use only the most efficient motors available. Run the calculations for yourself.

Use MotorMaster+ software to compare the costs and savings when selecting a replacement motor. Visit our request literature page to get your own copy of MotorMaster+ on a CD Rom.

NEMA premium efficiency motors will quickly save far more than the cost of the motor and keep on saving for years to come. Why waste profits on less efficient motors? You will also reduce pollution far more than you realize.

Real Cost of Electric Motors

Real Cost of Motors

"The cost of the motor is insignificant compared to the cost of the electric power required to run it."

T. Jones, CEE

NEMA Premium® Motors SAVE Substantial Amounts of Money.

  • A typical 20-hp electric motor running continuously at full load costs over $14,000 per year to operate. * Replace it with a NEMA Premium® motor and save over $300 every year on electric power. ($0.10 per kWh)
  • A NEMA Premium® 25-hp, 1800-rpm, TEFC 460-volt motor operating 16 hours per day at 75% load will save $600 per year over a standard motor. Even without a rebate the payback is less than eight months. *
  • A typical 100 HP motor at full load, continuous operation, costs over $70,000 per year to operate. Using a NEMA Premium® motor will save roughly $1400 each and every year. * ($0.10 per kWh)

Saving power means less pollution and greenhouse gases. Large amounts of fossil fuels are consumed to produce power and combustion, heat loss, and power transmission losses add up. The result is surprising to most, but small increases in efficiency by the end-user have a positive effect on the environment.

  • Replacing JUST a single 1-HP motor with a NEMA premium® efficient motor, eliminates one barrel of oil, or 520 pounds of coal from being burned. Look at the example below and then imagine how much pollution can be eliminated if all motors were NEMA premium® efficiency.

* Continuous operation at $0.10 per kWh
* 2% increase in efficiency in this example.
* 20 HP 1800 rpm ODP or TEFC 3 phase motor at 91% replaced with 93% at $0.10 per kWh
* annual operating cost = (HP x .746 kW per HP x hrs per year x $ per kWh) /motor efficiency
